Knowledge base 203: Manually Installing SQL Server Express 2022

This article will guide you through the process of installing SQL Server Express 2022 manually and setting this up to work for an Identity Access instance.

Requirements - 
Unrestricted Internet Access
PC Administrator Privileges
All Windows Updates being installed

Downloading SQL Server Express 2022 

2. Select Language as "English" and click the Download button
 

Installing SQL Server Express 2022

1. Navigate to the folder where your web browser has stored "SQL2022-SSEI-Expr", this is normally in the Windows Downloads Folder

2. Double-click the "SQL2022-SSEI-Expr" ,to start the installation. If your User Account Control prompts you to allow this app then press Yes. If you are prompted for admin credentials then it is highly recommended you switch accounts to an Administrator user account before you start this installation.
3. Select the installation type "Custom".

4. Click the install option.

5. Once installed, the SQL Server Installation Center will appear. Select "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation".

6. Click "I accept the license terms and privacy Statement" and then Next
7. Tick "Use Microsoft Update to check for updates" and click Next.
8. The install will go through a series of checks on your PC to make sure you have permission to install and there are no pending downloads. If any rules show failures you will need to resolve this before continuing. Warnings for the Windows firewall can be ignored and click Next.

9. Untick  "Azure Extension for SQL Server" and click Next.

Please note: This may error if one of the Pre-requisite applications / features have not been installed on your PC. These applications / features can normally be turned on using "Turn Windows Features On or Off" which is located by using PC's search bar. 
9. Change the "Named Instance" to "IdentityAccess" (or "MorphoManager" if using this guide to assist with installing SQL for MorphoManager) , you should notice that the "InstanceID" also changes automatically, and click Next.

10. If you are going to being using the Identity Access Client software Change the "SQL Server Browser" Startup Type to "Automatic" and click next











































11a. For Identity Access installations: change the "Authentication Mode" to Mixed Mode. Enter C0ntr0lS0ftAdm1n@! as the password. 

Note: you do not have to use Mixed Mode or C0ntr0lS0ftAdm1n@! as the password, however this is the default for creating and using the databases within Identity Access. Using different password is deemed to be an advanced configuration and should only be undertaken if you have SQL Server knowledge.
11b. For MorphoManager installation, change the "Authentication Mode" to Mixed Mode. Enter C0ntr0lS0ftAdm1n@! as the password. The "System" user also has to be added to allow MorphoManager to connect to your database. Click on "Add..." button  - a pop up  will appear  - In the person to select   -type system . Then click "Check  Name"  - the NT AUTHORITY \SYSTEM  user will be added to the SQL administrators on the system.




This will allow "SYSTEM" to connect to the MorphoManager database (when created later) .

12. Then press Next, the installation will begin 
Once complete, press close

Finally,  Restart the PC and continue with the Identity Access installation. The Identity Access installation wizard will recognize that you have an Instance called IdentityAccess installed, when prompted click No to install SQL Server as you now already have the correct instance!
